Vapor Cooled Structures

Vapor Cooled Structures

Quest Thermal has worked on more than 10 R&D programs for NASA and Aerospace Primes developing new vapor cooling methods and insulation systems.   IMLI supports embedded Broad Area Cooled shields with our low heat leak discrete spacers, and can provide optimal passive or active vapor cooling.

Quest’s Vapor Cooled Structure MLI creates novel, highly efficient vapor cooling layers using a number of new technologies. Our unique vapor cooling methods include direct tank wall cooling, Broad Area Cooled shields, cooling channels in tank supports, and strut and skirt cooling methods that add very low mass, while efficiently cooling. One configuration provides a measured 93% reduction in skirt heat leak for LH2 tanks.

Integrated vapor cooling within IMLI structures routinely provides 50% to 70% reduction in heat flux using passive LH2 boiloff, and helps achieve Zero Boil Off with actively cryocooled systems.
